چکیده

This paper reports a study on the acoustic realization and the perception of the rhythmic structure of Vietnamese folk poetry. Ten speakers of Sài Gòn dialect recite four folk poems that were made up of three-word, five-word, six-word, seven-word, and eightword lines. The acoustic analysis showed that the duration and intensity results mirror each other in indicating a strong iambic pattern of prominence, supporting the literature that a line of folk verse with even number of syllables tend to have a series of iambs and when there is an odd number of syllables, the line usually ends with an iamb, not an anapaest (Durand and Nguyễn, 1985). The perception results showed that listeners relied on duration cues in judging the rhythmic patterns of the poetic lines while intensity was not used. Also, majority of listeners were not finely tuned to these acoustic cues and only a few listeners could detect them in parsing the poetic lines into detail bi-syllabic iambic units.

Acoustic and perceptual cues for compound-phrasal contrasts in Vietnamese.

This paper reports two series of experiments that examined the phonetic correlates of lexical stress in Vietnamese compounds in comparison to their phrasal constructions. In the first series of experiments, acoustic and perceptual characteristics of Vietnamese compound words and their phrasal counterparts were investigated on five likely acoustic correlates of stress or prominence (f0 range and...

Two Sides of the Same Coin? Investigating Iambic and Trochaic Timing and Prominence in German Poetry

This paper examines the acoustic and perceptual properties of iambic vs. trochaic meter in a large corpus of read German poetry. Psychoacoustic evidence of metrical grouping is not straightforwardly applicable to speech, due to the complex interaction of the involved acoustic parameters in prominence expression. It is possible that grouping effects in (poetic) speech are merely an artifact of l...

Stress, tone and word prosody in Vietnamese compounds

Vietnamese compounds and phrasal constructions are investigated for phonetic correlates of lexical stress. Two series of experiments on the acoustic and perceptual characteristics of Vietnamese compound words and their phrasal counterparts are reported here and in a companion paper (Nguyen & Ingram, this volume), involving paradigmatic (same position within a syntactic frame) and syntagmatic co...

Timing studies of read prose and poetry with parallels in music - a research proposal

A research project on timing relations in prose, poetry and music is outlined. In order to gain a deeper understanding of speech prosody, a comparison will be made of timing relations in such activities as reading of poetry and music performance, where there usually is a strong and obvious rhythmic patterning of the produced sound sequences. Also there are interesting parallels to be drawn by c...

A rhythmic-prosodic model of poetic speech

In this paper a new approach towards the analysis of speech rhythm is presented. In the speech rhythm literature it was often discussed that rhythmic phenomena are more transparent in the metrical structure of orally produced poetry. However, up to now only a few phoneticians have worked on this special speaking style. For analyzing the rhythmic and prosodic patterns of this kind of speech, a c...
